United HomeCare Services, a public 501(c)3 charitable organization, was founded in 1974 by the United Way, in response to the growing need that existed in our community for affordable home care services. The Agency received an initial allocation of funds to serve the elderly 60+ and disabled adults (18-59).
United Way and United HomeCare Services reassessed the Agency in 1979 and made three events possible: the Agency obtained the role as the Dade County Community Care for the Elderly Lead Agency, under a new Act passed by the Florida Legislature, the Agency became independent from United Way, and a satellite office was created. Two years later, the Agency began operations in a new location with total independence. In l989, the Agency focused on long-term objectives and installed a new President and CEO, who recruited a strong management team.
From 1990-1999, United HomeCare Services concentrated its efforts on building a solid organization by offering clients the opportunity to receive a broad spectrum of services and continuity of care. The Agency became a licensed Home Health Agency, received national accreditation by the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), and Medicare Certification. In 1995, the Agency established The Claude Pepper Memorial Awards Dinner to honor individuals who demonstrate excellence and leadership for the betterment of the elderly, disabled adults, and the Miami-Dade community. Proceeds from this event assist the agency in expanding existing programs and services.
In keeping with its mission, "To make a difference in the lives of individuals by offering home health and community care solutions that promote independence and wellness," in 2004, United HomeCare Services implemented Solutions, a long-term care diversion program in partnership with the State of Florida Department of Elder Affairs. This program offers those at high risk of nursing home placement the opportunity to receive the daily assistance needed to remain living at home. The agency’s initiative in disease management gave birth to a Telehealth Program. This program, made possible by a grant awarded by the Health Foundation of South Florida, has given United HomeCare Services the opportunity to provide clients with a means of monitoring their vital signs remotely, and in turn reducing their emergency hospital visits.
Throughout its history, United HomeCare Services has provided in-home care services to thousands of Miami-Dade’s elders, disabled adults, and their families. It has received numerous awards for leadership, excellence in caring, management, and community involvement. The agency has grown to over 600 employees providing home care, nursing, and therapy services as well as caregiver support, nutrition, and counseling.
Today, the agency operates in partnership with the United Way of Miami-Dade County, the Alliance for Aging, the State of Florida Department of Children and Families, the State of Florida Department of Elder Affairs, the State of Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration, and the Alliance for Human Services.
